I ran out of power/battery as it was not plugged into the mains. I was online at the time. Now windows will not restart. Every time I turn on the pc I get a black and white screen which asks me to start windows repair or start windows normally. Tried these two several times. Cannot fix the problem. Any ideas would be most welcome?
My laptop turned itself off while I was online as I had run out of power now it wont start up

Have you tried starting windows in safe mode?
Up until Win 7, you made that by pressing F8 (press it multiple times) before the windows logo appears. The it will show a start menu where you will choose Safe Mode. I don't know if it's still the same on win 8, i haven't use it enough.
Try it and tell us.
