I have a realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller on my AsRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0.

Wjindows 8.1 says I have limited connectivity on my ethernet (and wifi) connections, yet I can still access the internet via chrome and Internet Exproler on the desktop. However, I cannot get updates from Windows Update because it thinks there's a problem with my connection. Any Ideas? my sister's Toshiba windows 8.1 laptop's behaving the same way.

I'm thinking I may need a new router, my ethernet is going through our Netgear router and it's around 4 years old.

But hopefully it's just a quick software fix.

Try updating the drivers for the LAN and WLAN.

Have you tried booting into safe mode with networking enabled to see if the problem persists?

I haven't tried safe mode but I found out my BIOS verison is P1.0 and the current up-to-date version should be P1.6 so I should probably do that first.

Open command prompt and type "ipconfig /all |clip" (i.e. "|" alt code 1, 2, 4). Paste into notepad and then post the results if possible.

ha the smilie lol. i gues "Media disconnected" is a bad thing. I've tried going to properties, configure, power management and unchecking "let the computer turn off this device to save power"

Right mouse click on "This PC" or Computer; select Manage; open Device Manager; Network adapters; right mouse click on your network adapter; select Properties; select the Driver tab and that will give you some different options for updating as well as rolling back the driver.

Let me reset my router, as the ethernet cable is going through there...

well that didn't work. ugh this is weird because most people with this problem can't get on the internet but I can. I can't get windows updates or get on their App store, or anything in the metro UI but Desktop works fine.

Try running Angry IP Scanner http://angryip.org/ and see if that gets you anywhere.

Okay. not sure what to make of it. I installed it and ran it without changing any settings. At the end I got a message that said

Hosts Scanned: 254
Hosts Alive: 5

Idk what that means or if it's normal for that many to be dead.

That's normal. All the dead connections are IP address's that are not being leased on your network out of the 254 available address's (there are 255 address's but one is held in reserve for the router to use).

You can check this thread out: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/window... I've heard of others that have similar issues after updating from 8 to 8.1 and reinstalling the OS "fixed" the problem. There are a multitude of things that can cause this problem (router settings, port forwarding not being configured correctly, firewall blocking certain ports etc.) and It can be difficult to narrow things down.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Resetting Interface, OK!

Restart the computer to complete this action.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

I tried this (off of the Microsoft Help site you gave me) and I got the above. I'm thinking the last resetting fail and denied access is a bad thing. They said this could solve the problem but mine won't actually reset. :(

this all happened after installing my new 1TB WD Black HDD. I really doubt there's any relation but could that be related to the problem i've having now? the drive works fine.

i don't know what to do. I'm running windows 8.1, what if I reset my PC completely using the Windows reset tool? (after backing up personal files of course).

It will ask me to put in recovery or installation software but I only have my Windows 8 CD...i don't think it will accept that. guess I'm screwed.
