Help with windows 8 key

I have windows 8.1 installed on my pc, I used the serial key twice when my first hard drive died. So the key being used for my copy of windows doesn't work. I have a window 8 pro key though so will I be able to use it on my windows 8.1 or is there a way to upgrade windows 8.1 to 8.1 pro and then use my pro key?

the key should work if you only change the hdd.
