I'm buying a laptop with an 840m with 8gb of ram. The 840m runs off 2gb of ddr3 ram, so is there an option to use shared memory? Would it even help performance?

Solution
It would be much slower to share system memory. Vram, even your ddr3 2000mhz on the 840M will be much faster than system memory. Also much lower latency. In addition, the GPU has its own bus (64 bit) to send info over. This is much faster than then going through the entire system chipset/cpu. There is direct communication between GPU and Vram.

But does the GPU itself have dedicated vram? From all the laptops I've used, the gpu will share RAM with the rest of the computer. Does this only occur when you have an iGPU? Does a dedicated card like the 840M actually have its own Vram?

Yes it has it's own ram VRAM. IGPU, which is an Integrated GPU will share system memory. The 840, which is a Dedicated or desecrate GPU uses it's own memory. Called VRAM.

The GPU's power will be limited when compared to an actual PC (tower). SO you wouldn't ever really be able to dial up the settings to MAX on modern games. This is the case with most all laptops. Laptop GPU is less powerful then PC tower counterparts. That being said, you will never get utilize the whole 2GB of VRAM, which is good! you won't ever need to use the much slower system ram (one VRAM is maxed out, the system ram is utilized).

No prob. Also, STEAM now offers game streaming. If you have a wifi network in your home, you can now stream games off of your desktop, utilizing your more powerful desktop hardware, onto your laptop. Similar the the Nvidia Shield. Look into it if you don't already know about it.

Yea I have a ****ty PC hooked up to my TV that I stream games from my gaming PC. The problem is, for OP, he has a gaming laptop, which sort of diminishes the point of streaming since the laptop would traditionally be a very low power device that is stationary and hooked up to a TV.

Oh wow, literally RIGHT after I posted this, I looked out my door and my laptop was sitting right there delivered from Amazon.

Yes, it does have 2GB dedicated, even says it right on the little sticker on the inside of the lid.
