Hot CPU causing games to crash?

Hey everyone, I had already made a thread in Systems about having an issue where All my games CTD after a while playing, but I figured I'd ask this specific question here.

The Issue: For most games I've played for the last month and a half or so I eventually CTD with the message "PROGRAM has stopped working"

After troubleshooting a lot I could not find a solution.

However, I downloaded CAM and found my CPU running up to 82 degrees. At this point the game Mirror's Edge would crash after 5 minutes of play

My CPU is an intel 3570k with the stock fan, and I have a coolermaster HAF Med case

I opened my case and noticed that there was a lot of dust in the fan/ heatsink, and so I cleaned it out.

After doing so I could run Mirrors edge up to 45 minutes without a crash.

However, the temp of the CPU gradually increased until it peaked around 77-78 and I crashed again.

My question: could my problem with CTDing be related to my CPU getting hotter than it should, particularly if it has been getting this hot for a while (possible damage over time?)

Thanks,

Do you have any idea of the temps on the rest of the system components? It is very possible that the heat is causing instability. The stock heatsink is really insufficient for gaming loads, especially if it is a model that didn't include the copper slug integrated into the heatsink.

I would recommend getting the gamer standby CPU fan, the cooler master hyper 212 evo. The cooler has added benefit of increasing airflow over chipset heatsinks and memory dimms alongside the excellent cooling for the CPU.

The GPU is fairly cool ussually around 60 at higher loads. The rest of the components, if I remember, are not getting hot (Ill check when I get home). I was definitely considering picking up the hyper 212 evo, and might just go for it, given its only 30 bucks and can only help.

Try applying a good thermal paste on cpu...
Bout cm hyper 212 evo....... its pretty old now....
I suggest go with a little higher budget to buy Be Quiet! Shadow rock 2 ($50) or CM Hyper N520 ($37). Or if its possible go with water cooling (240mm radiators starts from $65 onwards) since its giving 77 degrees.... running that chip above 73 degrees will shorten its life....... Since you have CM HAF cabinet, you can fit 240mm radiators easily in your case.......
but before buying coolers, you should try thermal paste.............
good luck.......

The hyper 212 evo is a few years old now, but there is a very very good reason it is a huge seller. It is easily the best bang for your buck in air cooling until you hit the $60+ range. The mounting system is very easy, the build quality is good and it is very quiet, even when you mount a second fan on it for a push/pull setup.

Replacing thermal paste and getting the 212 evo has resulted in me not crashing anymore. Still need to test if my video rendering works, but Im considering this fixed! Thank you very much!
