FPS Issue / Drops

Hi,

I noticed this issue when playing WildStar which I was aware was optimised poorly at launch, especially for AMD chipsets.

However I have now also tried another game which is Final Fantasy XIV and I am experiencing the same problem.

I can run the games smoothly with no problem, and then all of a sudden I receive massive FPS drops. For example in FFXIV I am running at 60FPS with V-Sync and then it will drop to between 10 - 20, and this is exactly what was happening in WildStar too. It takes a while for it to begin to happen in the game, maybe 20 - 30 minutes but when it does start happening it becomes frequent but the intervals are not the same length.

I am not sure what is causing this issue - I have tried googling and see various ideas but it looks as if I'm not alone. Throttling is suggested a few times, so I had Afterburner make some logs and the logs just show GPU usage drop to 0% at these times.

I tried uninstalling video drivers using DDU, I have even tried a fresh clean install of windows (I was on about doing it anyway) but the problem is still there.

Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this and a possible fix?

Cheers

Edit: Specs would help!

Hopefully I can help! I've had the same problem, as I have your same GPU.

Once your GPU hits a certain temp, it will automatically reduce speeds to cool down, which drops your performance. What are your temps like?

Hey thanks for your reply.

At one point the GPU temps were 58 - 60, however earlier on when it occurred they were 68, which is the highest I can see Afterburner reporting.

Is there a way to combat this other than alternative cooling?

Those kinds of temps are quite cool for a 290!

Another issue might be one of the background programs running on your computer. could I have you run msconfig from the start menu, then disabling ALL services? Then try what you've been trying for a while, see if the issue occurs. If all is good, then we can begin troubleshooting which program is the culprit.

Sure I'll give that a go and let you know, but I can only see it being a windows process as I am not running a clean install of Windows, different OS too as I was running Windows 7 64 Bit before, and am now running Windows 8.1.

Will report back, but nice to know that my cooling may not be the issue then.

Just going to update here.

The issue still occurred when there were no services running.

I received some advice in PM regarding my PSU not being powerful enough to run a greedy CPU and GPU as it was 600w, so I upgraded that to a 750w but I am still having the issue although it has now changed slightly.

GPU usage is no longer dropping to 0% but around 25%, but my FPS is still dropping from 90 - 120 down to 10 - 20 for a few seconds, before it then goes back up to it's normal.

I have started timing how long it is taking and it takes roughly 8 minutes of gameplay for this to occur, but once it has started it becomes more frequent.

I have also disabled CPU thread parking, to see if that made a difference and it did not.

Here is a link for a picture of CPUID and Afterburner showing what is happening on my pc, I have circled the huge trough on Afterburner.

Does anyone else have any other theories?

Just double checked that my CPU temperature wasn't causing this, and my max CPU temp whilst playing the game is 59 degrees, so that shouldn't be an issue.
