Screen goes black and fans start going crazy!?

So my computer randomly crashes, can be in a game or if I watch a movie. The screen goes black and the fans start going at 100% (on the graphic card), the first few seconds after the crash i can hear the sound from what I was doing prior to the crash. After that the sound gets laggy and I have to restart it manually
I thought overheating was the problem and it might be (I'm not quite sure) however I used a program to check my temperature to see if that was the case. But the it indicated that my GPU Temperature doesn't exceed approx 59 degrees cel. And just to be sure I decided to clean the fans and everything in the tower (didn't put in new thermal paste). It didn't so i tried to reformat the computer since I then thought it was a software failure or something. It still crashes.
I then found that if I use a program called MSI Afterburner (overclocking program), which allows me to control the fans, it doesn't crash when I use this. I set my fans to around 80% and I don't experience a crash, however it's really noisy .
Does anyone have any idea what I should do?

And just some quick info about my pc:

  • Motherboard: Asus M4A87TD Evo
Grapics card: ATI Radeon HD 6800 series
CPU: AMD Phenom II, 3,4 GHz 4x 965

I have a feeling that it have something to do with the GPU, but I'm not sure. Please help :??:

Solution
have you tried different drivers? If not try this first quick and easy to try.

Prime95 for 2 hours, intel burn test for 20 runs with stress level at max : to test the CPU.
Memtest86+ run for 11 passes : to test Ram.
OCCT run on GPU test with error checking enabled : to test GPU.
HDDscan3.3 to read the smart functions of the HDD.

if the issue presists after trying the new driver/s run these programs and see if you can pinpoint the component causing the issue. Just run Memtest86+ first as Ram errors can show up as a issue with the CPU.

EDIT: Occt will push the GPU and show temps all at the same time to see if the GPU is over heating.

Well, sometimes the beginner mistake when monitoring temperatures is monitoring them when you are not gaming (Just sitting in the desktop) . Are you monitored the temps while you are gaming at least 30 minutes?

I tabbed out several times during my game to see the temperature, not once did it exceed 59 degrees. In any case could u recommend program for monitoring the temperature where I could log it to see the exact temperature when it crashed.
And I don't get to game for 30 minutes before it crashes.
