Well, my friend finally got his new parts; a amd fx-8350 black edition, his Cooler Master Seidon 120V, Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 and his Sapphire R9 290 OC Tri-X.

We weren't that lucky upgrading the system.. After having a lot of placement problems, we ended up with another problem; the R9 290 needs a 8 pin AND a 6 pin. So at first we couldn't give it enough juice because the PSU only had 1x 6+2 pin PCI cable. It's a pretty unknown PSU, it's a Ewent 650W. Personally never heard of it before. Sidemark of eminent.

So later that day, we found a 2x molex 4 pin to 1x 8 pin adapter in te box of the R9 290. We used that one to power it. At first it worked! But after 3 minutes of playing Battlefield 4 and testing it. We heard a bang and the light fell out. After turning on the lights again, we came back in the room, there was a strange smell, like something was burned. Rapidly we removed the GPU and went smelling on every part to find out what it is. The GPU smells not that weird but for testing I took it home (testing it tomorrow). PC won't start.. PSU was really really hot.

--QUESTION--
But my actual question was; Is it the PSU that's broken or is it shortage in the system itself? And is it possible that all the new parts like the CPU have burned through?

Sorry for my english, I'm Dutch.

Thanks in advance.

PSU is dead.
Short in system. Only way to find out is have a bread boarded computer.
-put mobo(NO GPU) on mobo box.
-Connect HDD, mouse, keyboard, and monitor. If that starts, then it is OK.

Tell us if the GPU works. If it does, then you are a lucky man that the PSU did not take anything with it.

Get a silverstone, seasonic, of XFX, with a wattage of 700+.

Oops, forgot something. Can you use another PSU that is KNOWN to be good?
