Why is my laptop shutting down when I merely message my friend on Facebook?

Since I am quicker at typing on a keyboard rather than texting, I usually try and resort to messaging via my laptop. Lately, however, my laptop has been shutting down as soon as I try to write a new message to my friend, which has me worried I may have contracted a virus. However, it is only affecting this, and my anti-virus software is detecting zero viruses as of this post. Please, I really would like to know what is happening with my laptop. This wasn't happening a week ago, and suddenly it has, and now I'm getting anxious. Thanks in advance!

Do you mean that it is only shutting down when you type? How much can you type before it shuts down? Before it shuts down, when typing, is the typing accurate? or does it type different letters than you enter. Is numlock on? Some laptops that don't have a 10 key pad, when you turn numlock on will dramatically change the keys.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying. Usually, it's only a few letters or a single word before it kicks me out. When I go back in, everything is as I left it. No, it has nothing to do with the numbers lock. I must also add that while typing this reply it has shut down three times...It's spreading and that is not helping my worries.

I have never heard of a machine doing this before. If typing and only typing is making it shut down it would seem that there is a physical problem with the keyboard itself, such as a short. The one thing I can suggest you do is to go into the power options in control panel, click on "change when the computer sleeps" on the left and click on advanced settings. Open "power buttons and lid"> "power button actions" and set it to "do nothing". If the keys are shorting to the power button this will keep it from shutting down when you type. Other than that, I would remove the keyboard and carefully reseat the ribbon connector. and check for anything that is potentially a problem as you do that. Then, try a different keyboard. Good Luck, let me know how it turns out. Like I said, this is a new problem to me, never heard of it before.
