I'm looking at building/buying a computer with the following specifications:
cpu: i7 4790k
mobo: ASUS Z97M-PLUS (Intel Z97 Chipset) (MATX)
gpu: GTX TITAN Z
ram: 16gb corsair vengence platinum 1866mhz
psu: Corsair HX1050
Is this overkill for gaming at 1080p?

More about : overkill 1080p

Way overkill, my rig in the signature maxs just about everything I've thrown at it in 1080p

it is considered overkill, but what's it worth to people?

Why not go for a R9 295X2 instead, costs half the price, and actually in many cases performs better then the Titan Z. On top of that it is watercooled and comes in a nice brief case. I'd get that instead and then purchase a 4k monitor to go with it, and it still is cheaper then that overpriced Titan-Z.

What are the advantages of the amd solution other than costs?

watercooled, Larger Memory bus, Performance in many reviews comes out better, many more ROPS's, and higher clock speed. The cards are also barely underclocked as the combined wattage is 500W TDP, the Titan Z has a TDP of 375W, and both the Titan Black and R9 290X have a 250W TDP, so the Titan-Z is 125W underpowered, and that mean the Titan-Z's gpu's are underclocked much more then the R9 295X2's. Also get a 4k monitor and put that monster card to the test!

Alright, I will choose this card instead of the titan z. Thank you.

Mind you if buy d 295x u will need space to install the watercooled fans and good psu. Just another optioned but not mentioned try the titan black edition
