Is it ok to output VGA and HDMI at the same time, with slightly different resolutions?

I have a Dell Inspiron Studio 1749 laptop with an ATI Radeon Mobility 5650 video card. It has both VGA and HDMI outs. Can I push both VGA and HDMI signals at the same time, to peripherals that have just slightly different resolutions? Or will that mess the card up?

The main laptop screen is at 1920 x 1080i. I want to send that signal to a Roland VR-50HD video mixer via HDMI, so I don't have to do a lot of manual scaling. (I can do some. I just don't want to.)
Then, because of my existing teleprompter hardware, I want to send a VGA video signal first to a Hall Research RC-VGA-2B (signal inverter), and then to a Hannspree HL161ABB 16-Inch LED-Lit Monitor at 1366 x 768 resolution (16:9), which serves as my teleprompter screen.

My concern is that the native 1920 x 1080i on my screen (which I want to push to the Roland via HDMI) is a just-slightly-different aspect ratio than the 1366 x 768 Hannspree. (I mean, they are both nominally 16:9, but when you divide the numerator by the denominator, the numbers are just a little bit different.)

I can split the VGA signal, and send one to the Hannspree monitor, and the other one to the Roland VR-50HD, it is just that due to hardware limitations, it would be easier (and cheaper) for me to send a VGA signal to the Hannspree, and an HDMI signal to the Roland. Thanks.

More about : output vga hdmi time slightly resolutions

the monitors will produce the same resolution as the main display in the laptop..

the vga or hdmi outputs will just have "black borders" on the sides of the screen to match the resolution.

try it out. then check the amd vision/catalyst center to change resolutions to improve display output.

Hi,

The answer to your question is "maybe". Many device that use AMD graphics can only handle two non-DisplayPort displays and on your laptop one of those is the laptop's monitor. This means that you may only be able to connect either an HDMI output or a VGA output but not necessarily both. The only way to be sure is to try it.
If you can output both, all three displays can be configured with independent resolutions and refresh rates, that much will not be an issue.

Ok, I need to get a different monitor in, so I can mount everything, and check it out in place. Please give me a few days, and then I will let you know. Thanks!

I could not push both VGA and HDMI at the same time. I had to find a specialty monitor (tiny 10.4" Lilliput) for the teleprompter. It accepts the 1920 x 1080, and also self-reverses. It is a small image, but it will probably work.

Thank you all for your help.

Sorry that it didn't work out but I'm glad that you found a work around.
