I have a hard drive in my Dell laptop (Windows 8) that has completely gone out. I've tried creating an image, but it's far too gone to make it successful. I've bought a new hard drive, but is there a guide to buying (which I'm assuming I have to do) Windows 8 and setting up a new hard drive without the ability to clone?

Not really sure what to do now that I have a new hard drive.

You should have a windows license key on the laptop or in the box with your laptop.
If not then it might be embedded in to UEFI bios and might require a dell installation disc.
You definitely don't need to buy a new windows license if it was already preinstalled by dell.
If you don't have installation disc you can order one from Dell, usually cost a couple £/$.
