Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB

I own and it is great. If you want to spend more, like 100 more, there is the Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB . It is a bit faster being 10,000 RPM vs the 7,200 RPM of the previous model.

Are you looking for a primary drive, or something that is more just for storage?

Western Digital is good. They have a color coding system for their drives though. Green is intended to be more power efficient and will cycle down when not in use. Not great to install your operating system or applications on. WD Black drives are intended for common usage and as boot drives.

What you intend to do with the drive will help us to answer your question better.

The keyword here is "Gaming". I'm a gamer as well and if you want TOP performance, you will be very happy with the Western Digital Velociraptor. http://www.partschase.com/index.php?route=product/produ...

The faster seek time (10,000RPM vs. 7200RPM) will definitely provide a top performing hard drive. I know your original question was about "which" manufacture you should choose. And not to say that the comparable Seagate Drive wouldn't be just as good. But for gaming...focus more on the capabilities/seek time of the hard drive and less on the manufacture. As long as you stick with the major manufactures we will be pleased.
