I have a Compaq Presario SR2011WM that I picked up for $5.00 and I have a HP mobo with a CPU on it still. The Compaq uses a Celeron. I think the HP has a AMD in it. I no longer have the tower the HP came in so I forget what the CPU was in it. Would I beable to take the HP CPU off and place it inside of the Compaq? I have never done anything like that before. I have never changed out a CPU before.

What does the HP say on top of the CPU? The CPU will have its family and name labelled on it. Also, if it is an AMD, you will not be able to place it in the Compaq as that uses an Intel processor.

When switching CPUs out, you must remain in the same brand (mainly Intel and AMD), and you must use the same socket type.

If the heatsink is still on the motherboard and you cannot see the CPU, you can normally tell by the cooler. A recent Intel processor heat sink will say Intel on the top and will have four push pins that go down into the motherboard. An AMD heatsink will have one lever off to the side of the cooler.
