I have an XPS M2010 and I love the old dinosaur! I got it as a rebuild project, to satisfy my curiosity about the urban legend of the giant laptop.Like all laptops it runs really hot. Hotter than most. there is a second HDD directly over the heat pipes and the gpu. I am removing this HDD to remove that heat source but am considering adding a fan in that space. I have the fan, there is room for it, it appears the air flow will work to benefit the output of the existing GPU fan. Where would I be safe drawing the 5v of power? Would this extra "boost" burn out the existing one, 1" away blowing out?

never hear of anyone adding another fan in a laptop before. If anything. I would try to draw power from the same place as the other fans. Splice into the existing cables. I wouldn't try to draw power anywhere else.

I thought the same thing but I was also worried the extra current draw on the 3 conductor (monitored) fans may cause monitoring software to glitch so I wired it to a USB plug and mounted it on the back so it blows into the port on the back between the two exhaust vents. It is not as bad as it sounds since it is not really a laptop computer but a funky modular all in one computer that only moves occasionally, and then only to another room. It has actually brought the temps down around 10 to 20 degrees lower on average depending on usage. uses the battery faster but I do not depend on the battery. I could not have done this as well on a real laptop that was meant to be portable, It would be knocked off or suck up somebody's soda. Looks like a good fix for this situation.

Thank you for your interest, I got impatient for an answer and started tinkering.
