I have my pc which uses a dedicated graphics card in one house and my monitor in another house. The only way I can use my pc in the former house is if I can get my hands on a VGA-DVI adapter. My card only has DVI-D and DVI-I; does it make a difference or can I use a regular DVI-VGA connection. What is the difference between DVI and the other two?

For your situation, all that matter is that you have the four square pins around the flat pin to the left of the connector. Thats what carries the Analog signal which can be adapted to VGA.

You need a DVI-I (either one) or DVI-A port to adapt to VGA.
