Suddenly, Windows 7 Boot Manager Happened.

I am very careful with my computer, run virus scans every day, defrag every couple of days, turn off my computer every night (you get the point). Yet suddenly, when I turn on the computer, I'm getting something called Windows 7 Boot Manager. Two options: Start Windows 7, or do a Memory Test. Well, I've done both. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the memory. And every time I start the computer, it goes to the boot manager. I mean, it IS starting, so I can't complain much...but WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Do I have a virus? Did a Windows Update do something to my computer and make it go to this boot screen instead of the normal start screen? It's really annoying. I would like to get it taken care of and/or fixed if possible, with your help.

I didn't install anything new (on purpose) and my computer didn't install anything (as far as I know).

I did try to restore to a previous point before this started happening and no, it didn't help.

BTW, my documents, computer backups, etc. are on external hard drives, and my programs are on the C drive. I don't know if this makes any difference or not but thought I would throw it out there.

When I got the computer I installed AVG free and Ad-Aware. I ran both and they are saying virus-free. Also ran Bit-Defender online...same results. (I understand now that Ad-Aware is a full antivirus program and that I should probably uninstall it but I haven't done that yet although I'm planning on doing that because I'm sure I shouldn't be running two antivirus programs...but like I said, I've been running both programs for four years on this computer.) I should probably also mention that I run Auslogics Boostspeed V4.1 every morning (Disk Cleaner, Registry Cleaner, Track Eraser, and then Defrag every two days).

Ok...so don't run Auslogics every day, I get that. And I'm supposed to run something called msconfig.

How do I do this? I don't know what to do. The link you posted brings up a webpage and I don't know what I'm supposed to get out of this webpage. I don't know anything about programming or fixing computers. I am a computer dummy. The few things that I do know, I have learned purely by accident. Like, I can put a hard drive into the computer, or I can install an optical drive. One time I successfully installed some memory. I can manage to reset the modem when it messes up. But that's pretty much it.

Understood. You may simply need to repair your Master Boot Record. See this link:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32523/how-to-manually-repair-windows-7-boot-loader-problems/

If you decide to fix the MBR, as a precaution, make sure all of your personal files are saved somewhere other than your C: drive. Then perform the repair.

Unfortunately, I don't have the original Install Disc in order to be able to perform this function. The computer, when I purchase it, came pre-installed (as do many computers these days) with Windows 7. I did make System Recovery Disks the first time I used the computer as is suggested; would those work, or do I need the actual Windows program itself? Because I don't have it.

I am SO sorry to be such a pain in the you-know-what. I really appreciate your patience and your help.

Go here:

Get the ISO and burn to DVD the version of Windows you are using. These are legit official Microsoft files and available for users.

Use to preform the repair by booting from the DVD.

I've got the ISO downloaded and burned to a DVD. The past two times I've started my computer, the boot screen hasn't come up. I am at a total loss. I haven't done anything different; I haven't run the disc yet! Although now I am sorely tempted to go through everything that I own, get rid of everything that I don't need, do a major backup, reorganize my stuff, run a major antivirus scan, then re-install EVERYTHING from scratch. Tempted.

Why would the boot screen just stop? Things that make you go hmmmm....

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the DVD drive (or you manually select it at boot). Pay attention after it starts to boot from the DVD, you'll get a message to "press any key" to actually boot from the DVD. If you miss it, it will go straight to your HDD.
