I noticed a couple of months ago that instead of a full list of programs installed, I have a short list of about 21 proms, mostly Microsoft programs.

A number of months ago I installed the AVG tune up program, and want to uninstall it, but I cannot find it, or even how to get rid of it. It keeps boasting of what a good job it is doing, when I know I didn't pay for it, and frankly hardly noticed any change, but for weeks on end the damn thing kept popping up telling me to pay for it. It may have caused other problems (plugin crashes, rendering other programs inoperative, Skype and Dragon Naturally speaking and even in Google Chrome-no sound if the the plugins are crashing in FireFox).

I do not have a clue how to do that, even though I am the owner and sole user.

Look on the left hand of the Add/Remove Programs windows, what is it showing as the list? You can change the view to show updates, components or the regular programs. Maybe you added a filter to the view.

Some viruses can cause this and registry cleaners. Have you ran a registry cleaner by any chance? Did you do a backup of the registry? Check with the program if you ran it if it backed up the original registry you can restore.
