Edit:

Answer stays same as in other thread. Overclocking? Yes: get the i5 4690k. No: get the i7 4790.

The I7 had hyperthreading, the I5 is unlocked. I5 is all you need for gaming. What MB a are you looking at?

He was looking to use it as a gaming rig. so hyperthreading won't really benefit him.

If only gaming then stick with i5 regardless of overclocking. If you are not only gaming but also doing graphics intensive work like 3d rendering etc then get i7.

If running on clock speed, what advantage would the i5 have over the i7? 100mhz lower base speed and missing hyperthreading (regardless of it's raw gaming benefit) don't seem like an improvement to me.

The Core i5-4690K is fastest Core i5 Series processor of the Haswell Refresh lineup featuring a clock frequency of 3.5 GHz and a maximum boost clock of 3.9 GHz matching the specs of the Core i7-4770K in a way. It features 4 cores and 4 threads along with a fully unlocked design which allows users to overclock the chip.

I'ave already mentioned the base criteria. Pl remember hyperthreading is a good thing but that does not mean i7 is a 8 core CPU. NO. It still has 4 physical cores like i5 which also has 4 physical cores. No difference here. But i7 has two threads per core whereas i5 has one thread per core.

From gaming perspective i5 fulfills all your needs without bottlenecking.

If price difference isn't much between both versions then better go for i7 4790. The only disadvantage would be that you won't be able to overclock it beyond its max turbo but still you would get eight threads on four cores, hence some sort of future proofing.

So, as I said, the i7 4790 for the same money is the better alternative unless he intends to overclock.

Yes, But even with overclocking he won't have more threads per core :)  but more frequency.
