Hello everyone, i have an hp xw8400 server pc and i need to replace the motherboard in because i damaged some of the cpu pins in the board when i was trying to re apply thermal paste to the second cpu in the system.

well i was searching on ebay and found this board http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-PRECISION-690-LGA771-tray-Included-Motherboard-MY171-I-O-shield-included-/390880217272?pt=Motherboards&hash=item5b0246c8b8

and i wanted to know if it would be compatible with the hp system because i've heard dell motherboards have compatibilty issues with non dell systems and hardware.

the reason i want to go with this board is because its a great price and has a pci ex 16 slot.

thanks everyone in advance.

Solution
In all likelihood, none of the front panel connectors will fit (power, reset, LEDs, even the USB headers in some cases). Those Dells are quite proprietary.
Don't know that particular board but I would give odds that it won't work. Dell is famous for proprietary power supplies, for example. Can't replace the PS in a Dell consumer machine with a standard one.

Err, if you damaged CPU pins, don't you need a new CPU?

right i have heard that as well, is it the same for server boards though? i know there differences between desktop and server boards. and i meant i damaged the pins on the mother board not the cpu.

I'm trying to find a good socket lga 771 board with a pci-x 16 slot under 50$(money is pretty tight for me right now) that's why i was thinking about going with the dell mobo.

It is definitely the case with the server/workstation mobos. Of course, for $21.00, you might be able to kludge together a solution.

However, you could likely purchase a complete Dell server via Craigslist in your area for next to nothing as well and not have to deal with these issues altogether.

Main hardware should work okay. Most device to device interfaces are standards based. The connections between the case (switches and LEDs, the front panel stuff) are not standard. You may have to tinker a bit to make this work, but in the end it should.

BTW, does your current motherboard use the same type of memory as the Dell motherboard?
