Toshiba Satellite NB 10t A 101 Laptop 6 months old stuck "shutting down"

Unable to access the sign in menu or anything at all.
Screen "shutting down" with the usual circle spinning.
But it has not shut down for over 24 hours now.
I Have read about " disabling battery" on Help forums.
Not really sure how to do that.
the white light on the from edge of lap top is still flashing.
I have also Tried holding the Off button down. It seems to switch it off. However, when I open the top.
It has not switched off at all, and the same happens regarding the black screen showing "shutting down"
I can not even get to the sign in screen, to be able to do anything at all

Please Help. going crazy here. Many Thanks

It's not shutting off, you are putting it to sleep. Unplug and pull the battery. It will most definitely shut off. I suggest you look at advanced power options in control panel and set what happens when you close the lid, press the power button etc...

Hello Reedo
thanks for taking the trouble to offer up a solution.
However, I am unable to try that or anything at all. As I can not get into anything, as the screen is stuck on the "shutting down"
This morning, it was no longer showing the white light, so I was able to switch it on, thinking at last it had "shut down"
But No I have the same screen "Shutting down"
The keyboard is unresponsive, so I can not sign in to get to Control Panel. Nothing zilch.
Thanks

Did you do the 7/10/14 updates? My In-Law's computer was in a last good state prior to around 848am EST on 7/10/14 when a bunch of windows 7 security updates were downloaded and auto installed now. Getting clbcatq.dll error (corrupt or missing) on login screen. Cant restore from last known good restore point as it's saying the HP C: drive is corrupt. Running SFC now to see if that fixes and start up recovery (this is like the 6th time I've run that btw). CHKDSK got through a quick routine then it was better but couldnt open any program from the desktop without getting Critical Error's, running CHKDSK now again and it seems to be running through more items and taking longer hoping this one fixes it altogether.

Hold the power button for 10 seconds, see if it shuts off. if not, literally pull the battery out of the back of the laptop.

You misunderstood what reedo said. 1 Unplug the ac adapter. 2 TURN THE LAPTOP OVER AND TAKE THE BATTERY OUT. There a couple of latches near the battery, one of the latches locks it in. the other will lift the battery out when you move it to the side. You will see the battery lift a little and then just pull it the rest of the way out. This will disable all power to the machine and it will have to shut down. Just like unplugging a desktop from the wall plug. But on a laptop you always have power until you take out the battery. This is standard procedure. Piece of cake, nothing to it.
