Should I install Windows updates?

Hi guys,
I installed some updates on my PC a while ago. They were Microsoft updates. Then, my computer boot up time slowed down. I have an SSD and a pretty decent CPU.

Please don't tell me that "you must" install windows updates as I've heard it too many times and its not any advice.

Many thanks,
AKNerd

You should install Windows updates, if you care about security and stability.
I have all patches applied to 3 Windows 7 systems and a Server 2008 R2 system all running various SSD's and havent seen any impact on boot times, even comparing a fresh install boot to a fully patched boot a day later.

Only advice you will get I'm afraid. As the operating system size increases so will boot time. Though Microsoft does periodically roll updates together and optimize them (Service Packs) Probably be one more for Windows 7.

Boot times are much more affected by the programs you install.

Since you didn't actually list any hardware components, it is hard to say what your boot time should be.

Hi

In similar vein if you never go on the internet and have no internet connection then you will not miss Microsoft or Windows updates
Otherwise you would be stupid not to

You could choose to wait 10 days before running the updates so if any updates get withdrawn or replaced you miss the problems
Eg patch Tuesday + 10 or 14 days and manual updates but you risk forgetting

Many large enterprises hold off for a while , do some tests on a few of each type of PC & windows version before rolling out windows updates

Similarly with antivirus updates but not for so long

I havn't ever had any viruses or vulnerabilities with my systme anyway. I have AVG 2014, which updates reguarly and I don't do any banking data or anything like that online.

Even with a decent antivirus program installed you will need to update your system in order to fix security issues. Unless you are not connected to the internet, as already mentioned, you will need to update your system regularly.

Was the last updates you did on your PC "a while ago" from 7/10/14? I have a PC having issues after taking those updates was perfectly fine prior no bueno now. corrupt dll, corrupt C; etc messages. Running startup repair and/or chkdsk or sfc /SCANNOW from safe mode got me further than anything so far. On the 2nd chkdsk which is into more files and taking longer now hoping this gets me fixed or closer to a fix. Good luck.
