4k Monitor vs TV?

Hey guys (and girls) I'm in a quandary. Normally I like to wait on new technologies such as upgrading to 4k but my current TV broke leaving me unable to wait. So my question is this: do I need to buy a 4k TV to watch television or will a monitor due? I know the main differences is that TV's have the cable tuner necessary for decoding TV signals, however don't modern cable boxes already do that? I also have an Xbox One that I run my cable box through which I believe is a tuner as well. I just want to be sure I can watch TV before I spend the money on a new display. My cable service is DirectTV if that helps at all.

Thanks again,
Nick

If you plan to always use a dvr box that outputs hdmi then you dont need a TV with a TV tuner.

I have not looked at what is out in the market nowdays with 4k (between not being in the marke and not being overly concerned about tech that has almost zero content for it), but generally speaking once you break the 32" threshold the cost of a monitor is far more then the cost of a tv.

I'm going to be under the 32inch threshold, anything bigger in my small apartment would be asinine. I just figured if I'm already spending the money why not upgrade, it will be cheaper than buying a 1080p now and a 4k in 1.5 to 2 years.
