I'll start by saying that I know just enough to be dangerous with a computer. The hardware that I currently have is around 5 years old, with the exception of the hard drive, as you'll see below.

I recently bought a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 on it. I didn't encounter any problems with it until I tried to install updates. The first time I tried I had Windows Update install all of them at once. Upon restarting, my computer then blue screened. Not only did it blue screen, but there were these yellow lines that were going across the screen as well. The computer then automatically restarted before I could see what the error message was. It then continued to blue screen every time it tried to start Windows. I tried starting in Safe Mode but all it did was go to a "reverting changes" screen and stay there. I then tried reinstalling Windows 7 and everything seemed fine again. I then went through and started installing the updates one by one since I wasn't sure what exactly was going on. After quite a long time of installing updates and rebooting numerous times, it wasn't until I tried to install a Windows Update for my AMD Radeon HD 6800 that the blue screen happened again. I used a restore point to get out of the blue screen loop and then tried going to the AMD website and installing updates that way. The same thing happened though. So, at this point, it seems that any time I try to install updates for my graphics card and then reboot it causes my computer to blue screen endlessly. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

try this out where I say new card just remove and reseat your card...

start computer as normal-- got to add/remove programs--- uninstall all your old cards drivers and add on programs for the card--- shut down and then reboot back to desktop normally [ i dont like to do safemode here cause it my hide an issue ] and it should be running on the windows default driver to check-- go to device manager-display- right click your card [it may just say generic vga ] - property's - driver - and see that driver provider is microsoft- if so shut down and turn off psu switch unplug it wait a min or so push the power button like you normally do to start the computer to see if its discharged-- [if the computer comes on for like a second or two and...
never let windows auto install updates just set it to check for updates and you decide what ones you want it could install things you really don't want or need .. go back and review the updates and see if these something that don't look to be right for your build and uninstall them also what motherboard are you using??

I actually don't have a new card. The only thing that is different is my hard drive. For some reason when I try to update the drivers for my card with this new hard drive though it blue screens after rebooting. I did try installing the drivers from the desktop but it still gave me a blue screen upon rebooting.

I don't know I use 2 asrocks and don't have this issue - have you tried the 13.4 driver to see if it will take ?? if its the 14.xx there seems to be a few folks with issues with that driver ... main thing is make sure you read the drivers foot notes and be sure your doing things just right for the install/uninstall .. and you card may be showing its age being a 6800 I guess you been running it a wile and you never know if one will last several years or several months . its hard to say with out a back up card to test that..

so I assume that the card was working fine until you changed the drive? cause if its just the cards driver that's causing issues and nothing else it hard not to look at the card at fault

also when you uninstall the driver from programs and features with the catalyst insall manager when the pop up that ask remove all amd drivers and software you do check yes?

onr thing to try is when you do another clean install do the cards driver only and uncheck the rest and see if it works on that
