It depends on whether your PC is built by an OEM like Dell or HP. If it is you will need a new copy of Windows as the OEM ones lock to the motherboard. I've had some limited success in the past with Microsoft when OEM PC's have needed a new motherboard and are out of warranty, Microsoft let me transfer the license over but this isn't guaranteed. Even if your copy of windows is retail you'll still probably have to make a phone call to Microsoft.

It's always a good idea to back up your PC before doing something major like this, you never know what might go wrong e.g. wrongly reconnected SATA power cable fries your HDD or you have to remove the HDD to get the motherboard in and you accidentally drop it etc!

You need to understand that the motherboard is the link to every single hardware inside your computer. This means that it will need to be compatible with every piece.
1st - CPU socket. You need to chose your mobo in order to fit either your AMD or Intel CPU, plus the type of socket (FM3, FM2+, 2011, 1550, etc)
2nd - GPU. Is your GPU DDR5? PCIe? You need to know those things in order to make it work.
3rd - Eveything else. Less important, because of backward compatibilities, but still. HDD (SATA, IDE, etc), RAM (dual channel, quad channel, speed in Mhz, etc)

A good place to start when searching for compatibility issues is here : pcpartpicker.com
This site helps you with compatibility filters.

Hope this helps!

What i have right now is a Gigabyte M68MT-S2 (rev 3.1) mothrboard with a radeon 7970 gpu and amd phenom ii x4 955 cpu. Im wanting to switch to and intel motherboard so i can install an i5 4670k. Its definetaly my cpu's performance which is horrible. I can just about run bf4 on medium settings with this. I am lead to beleive that its the cpu.

1. That motherboard only supports DDR3 RAM so your sticks *should* be compatible but this is never a guarantee unless you can tell us the EXACT details of your current RAM sticks (Make, Model, Timings, Voltage). You can get this information using the free program CPU-Z
2. That motherboard only has SATA slots so your HDD will be fine in a new socket 1150 motherboard
3. Your GPU will be fine as it's PCIe
