I have 3 pc's on a wired LAN with a netgear router. Two are Win7, one is Win8. I'm trying to share a specific folder on each pc, but one of the Win7 machines won't cooperate.

From the two pc's that can access each others folders, I can ping the pc in question, and it's icon and folder actually shows up in the MyComputer>Network section. But when I try to click the folder it says basically "Win cant access \\stupid-pc check spelling... network problem... diagnose. Error code 0x80070035 ...path not found".

From the stupid-pc I can access both the other two pc's folders and files read/write without problems.

Diagnose of course does nothing. From searching on this forum and others, I've found similar issues but nothing seems to help. The 3 pc's are on the same homegroup, using the code that one of them generated. Networks are set as home network.

On all 3 pc's under Advanced Sharing: network discovery is on, file and print sharing is on, windows is managing homegroup, sharing so anyone with network access in public folders is on, I have 40- 56-bit encryption enabled cause there is an NT machine in the mix (just ignore that one for now), and password protected sharing is off.

On all 3 pc's: the folder is located at the root of C: If I right click>properties>sharing>share names listed are everyone and homegroup with full permissions. Advanced sharing button yields share this folder is checked, share name is correct, clicking permissions, everyone's permissions has all 3 boxes checked to allow. Clicking security tab everyone and homeusers have full allow permissions.

Windows defender is off, we are using Kaspersky on all 3 pc's. I've poked around in there but don't see anything that would be a problem. Also the same thing with Windows Firewall, which I've disabled temporarily but there is no change. I'm at my wits end and not sure what else to try. Hopefully someone here and point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.

looks like your PC's can't resolve stupid-pc's name to an IP address. What happens if you try to map the share as \\ip-address\sharename instead of \\stupid-pc\sharename ?

stuart72, thanks! That works, I can map using the ip. So it looks like a name issue. Worst case scenario, I could set some static ips, but it would be nice solve the issue though. Any idea on what would cause the names to not resolve? I don't think paths are case sensitive, but if they are, I have noticed some inconsistencies, I've tried to sort that out but it doesn't seem to affect anything.

check TCP/IP settings for stupid-pc. Is it set to use NetBIOS? Failing that is is set to use the same DNS servers as the other PC's? NetBIOS / DNS are the two main ways PC resolve hostnames to IP so i'm fairly sure the error lies there

TCP/IP settings appear to be the same across all the pc's. NetBIOS is set to default - use settings from DHCP server. And they are all set to obtain the DNS server address automatically. Under advanced tab, DNS address and suffix boxes are blank, which I assume is correct for this setup. Looking at ipconfig /all it says NetBIOS over tcpip is enabled. Looking at those settings between the 3 they all match where they should. I think I'll just go ahead and set static IPs. It's easier than pounding my head against the walls, or windows in this case. Thanks for your help!
