Hi Guys,

long time reader, first time poster. Thought I should finally sign up and ask for advice.

I recently got back into computers after a few years of absence from the scene. It started off by updating my old PC then I got hit by the builders bug and ended up buying better components. Lol

Anyway. I have to ask if my PSU is inadequate. I bought a Thermaltake LitePower W0355R 600Watt PSU and its running a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3 990FX DDR3 Motherboard with a GTX 780 GIGABYTE OC GHZ EDITION and the Cpu is the FX8350.

I know I'm pushing the limits and if i want to sli later I'm going to need a bigger psu. I guess my concern is when i run Prime95 i notice the cpu downclocks 1 core to around 3700mhz and then cycles that to the next core and the next core and so on. The temps are in the 50°c range. Do you think this a thermal problem or a psu problem?

HI,

There`s a lot of info on the web regarding what i think what is going on with your GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3 990FX,check out link below and you are looking for fx8350 throttling

http://

I brought a GA-990FXA-UD5 the latest version which also suffers from this and the solution i found was for a asus m5a99x r2.0 and have also read that some ASrock boards can run overclocked fx8350

Wow! I didn't expect such a quick response. Especially for a noon poster like myself. Thanks guys! I was going to disable c&c and enable hpc to see what happens. Just in response to beefy. Does your motherboard double boot as well when you change any bios overclocking or power saving features? "EG: Cold start. Switch power on, turns on a split second then shuts off then starts again normally.." :/ I always wondered about this but I've done a bit of searching. Some say it's the board syncing, some saying it's a Gigabyte thing. Any thoughts on that?

I removed the overclock on my gigabyte system and restarted and it did not do what you have described but this might be because I am running a phenom 955. I brought the GA-990FXA-UD5 because I had a GA-990XA-UD3 r1 and knew I would have problems overclocking a fx8350 with it,I then ordered the ud5 and after I did some research and found that it still had the same problem but I kept the mobo because it ran cooler then the GA-990XA-UD3 with the phenom 955. the asus will run the fx8350 overclocked but there is a setting in the bios that requires activation I think its called llc. I have this option on my gigabyte mobo but it does not work with the fx8350 and other high draw fx cpus. The way I understand it is the cpu requires more juice to overclock and this causes greater resistance in the circuit and when under load greater still. The llc should account for this by upping the volts a little but does`nt making the cpu throttle back. I think it`s know as ohms law. If i remember rightly I have read on the gigabyte forums that only 1 of their mobos will overclock the high draw fx chips and thats the 990fxa ud7,I have also read that by changing out one of the capacitors on another mobo sorts out this problem but I can`t remember which mobo it was. I just looked for a mobo that would overclock an fx8350 instead, the asus 990 mobos all seem to overclock from the m5a99xevo to crosshair v. there is a youtube vid that shows you how to adjust the bios to hit 5ghz on a m5a99x evo with a h100i doing the cooling.

sorry forgot to mention I read that at 5ghz running prime it will only run for a short time,40 to 50 secs I think I remember it was (long time ago I read that and memory is a bit hazy) but to run at 5ghz in everyday setting it runs fine.

Thanks for the info beefy! I did some tweaking around last night and I discovered when I switch off APM In The bios (which In turn, disables Turbo Core Indirectly too), the throttle back stops on prime95 for now. I read somewhere That APM is what controls the 125W TPH and is what downclocks cores to overclock others? I may be wrong here. Any who. I was able to drop the volts to 1.35v (optimized defaults on bios are 1.4v?) and got a very mild overclock of 4.3ghz. I want to go liquid before I get any higher. I've only just modded the stock cooler with a piggy back fan for now. While I save up some dollars for some new gear. :)

Hi,

If your gonna get an AIO water system there are only really 2 options the corsair h100i or the nzxt kraken x60 the later cools better by 2-3 degrees as it has a bigger rad it just depends what case you have, you can look on nzxt website they have search where you can put your case name in and it will tell you if it fits. I dont think the nzxt is really worth the price premium. The h100i works well but I have heard negatives about it,mine works well after firmware update and have not seen any reason to change stock fans. hope this helps and if you have any ??? just post back and I`ll do my best to answer them.
