So I've had the AMD FX 8120 3.1Ghz CPU for a couple of years now and just not impressed when it comes to gaming. I have the Cpu on the Corsair H100i Water coolikng running at 4ghz stable and I still get huge framerate drops when running games like Dayz and ARMA 3 running lower settings. I'm hearing that this cpu isnt great for gaming. I have a 300 dollar budget to, $200 for CPU and $100 for M/B. I was reccomended by a freind to go with a i5 4590 with my budget. Any suggestions? PC specs are below:

Win 7
AMD FX 8120 3.1ghz (corsair h100i water cooling)
8gb RAM
Nvidia GTX 770
600 watt power

DayZ and ARMA III are just plain unomptized games

you could get a 8350 if you want a cheap upgrade without reinstalling anything major
that should bring about 15% performance increase clock for clock

I would not base your computers performance off of those games. I have a 4770K and SLI 780s and I get micro stutter and dropped frames in both dayz mod and the standalone. Arma 3 is also not the best optimized game. Also over clocking does not guarantee better performance. I had a Phenom 965X4 a while back and when I tried some different settings and found that some actually had a negative affect on performance.

Agree with everyone those are bad choices of game to judge your 8120. Intel might be a better choice for you. But a 8350 isn't a bad choice either. You should overclock with the fsb with fx.

FX 8350 will provide a substantial improvement because on my Corsair H80i I already got it to 4.6ghz.With your H100i 5 ghz should be easily acheivable and at 5ghz that CPU is a monster to be reckoned with :D

On average the FX 8120 is 5% slower clock for clock and 15% faster when both CPUs are at stock speeds. There's not really that big of a difference.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-FX-8320-vs-AMD-FX-8120 Its a fair bit better this is the lower clock version too, they revamped the pile driver cores. Better OC's, faster all around speeds. Its worth it if he can sell his current cpu and get the new one without taking as much of a loss.

Other wise I urge you to wait until Intel's new CPUs and the DDR4 ram. That PC should last a fairly long time yet, with the 83XX series FX CPU even longer.

Keep in mind games are using more and more cores every year, those two games are terribly optimized on top of that so their not the best examples.

Thanks for backing up what I said, I think the basic tests on CPU boss even show that its much better all around.
