I have an acer Aspire 3400G and all of a sudden when I went to start it up I got the menu for starting in safe or normal mode. I selected normal mode and it looked like it was going to start up. I got the windows seven start screen and then it went to a black screen with just the cursor. I could hear the hard drive scanning and the cursor moves with the mouse. I waited ten minutes and shut down the machine. I restarted in safe mode and the windows files loaded. after that the screen went black with just the cursor. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Attach a secondary monitor. (could be incorrect display setting)
Try a different HDD. (1st HDD could be dead)
Attempt to reinstall windows. (files could have been corrupted from improper shutdown)
