I have had this pc for the better part of 6 months with 0 problems, running like a dream. Recently after a long night of gaming my pc shut itself off mid game and emitted a burning smell, it was also extremely hot. After doing some looking around on the internet most signs seemed to point toward the PSU being the problem. I bought a new PSU and swapped out the old one but it the same problem has occurred. It turns on for a split second (fans spin lights turn on) and then off again instantly, also to get it to do this have to unplug and replug the power chord and flick the switch on the psu. Not sure where to go from here.

when the power supply failed it may have killed a few other parts. take the pc down to onboard video if it has it and one ram dimm. unplug the drives and any other card and see if you can get it to post. if there no post see if any fault led are on on the mb and look on the motherboard power plug and other spots for burn marks.

That is not a good sign, it possibly shut down due to overheating or potentially as a result of it damaging your motherboard. If you can pull your graphics card and try it in another PC and see if your GFX card was what caused the smell or not. smorizio has some good info as well.
