Hey!

I'm wondering if it's worth due to the debate about high vram usage of new and future games to upgrade from a single gtx 770 2gb to sli or if it's better to wait for the 800 series and buy one of those cards and later on upgrade to sli.
I'm currently playing on a 1080p 144 benQ monitor.

I've sen different charts and benchmarks of different games like Metro Last Light, crysis 3, watch dogs etc. which states that the fps on cards in the same price range as gtx 770 like the 280x doesn't benefit from that 1gb more vram (in other words more than 2gb vram shouldn't be required since it's not dropping fps). Although I've seen enormous amount of people stating that 2gb of vram isn't enough for 1080p in current and near future games.

So my question is will that 2gb of vram bottleneck a gtx 770 sli? Is it even worth upgrading to a sli? How cost effective is it if I already have one gtx 770? What would you guys recommend?

My build:

Cpu: i7 4790k @ 4,7 mhz (h100i)
Ram: 16 gb of corsair vengence Lp @ 1600 mhz
Gpu: Gigabyte gtx 770 2 gb
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Hero vii
Psu: corsair rm 1000W

More about : gtx 770 2gb sli worth wait 800 series

In my opinion, hold on to your GTX 770 it still packs a punch and performs great for 1080p. I think 2 GB is enough right now. I would sell the card when an appealing 800 series Maxwell card comes out, though I am expecting NVIDIA to release 28 nm Maxwell 800 series which won't be as great of an improvement until the 20nm ones come out (I suspect by mid-late 2015). Likewise, the 800 series will most likely be based on GK204, the successor to GK104, which in my opinion won't be much of an improvement.

You can buy a second one and SLI, but I don't see the point for gaming at 1080p. My advice hold on to what you have and wait for "Big" Maxwell, the 20nm ones - which will be more improved than their 28nm ones.

Im thinking of a SLI just because I agree when u say the 20 nm will come out sometime mid 2015 and I dont want the 28nm Maxwell, although I want steady 144 while playing.

Then another 770 in SLI would be good. I would grab the cheapest 770 out there to save more.

My concern is just that the 2 gb vram wont be enough tho... What's your thoughts about that?

I'm in the same boat as you, I have a 2GB 770 and would like more VRAM. I would suggest holding off until the 800 series is released and upgrading to an 880. Rumours point to a holiday release, I'm to lay to find a source since I'm on my phone so just google it. I was strongly considering upgrading to a 6GB 780 or an R9 290, but was told that the 800 series is coming relatively soon so I'm holding out for an 880.

My thoughts? As of right now, 2gb is enough. In the future? No, not at all. Take Watch Doge and Titanfall as examples. WD requires more VRAM (close to 4), switching to medium settings on 1600x900p gives you better performance and uses less VRAM. Yet the game was poorly optimized, I believed it has been patched, so performance should be better (the game was a mess at launch even for NVIDIA owners).

Titanfall on the hand uses more than 3 GB of VRAM, but you can avoid this by running the game on medium and turning down textures quality.

Those are the two games as of right now that come to mind that benefit for more than 2 GB of VRAM, and a heavily modded Skyrim game.

Don't worry too much about it, 2 GB is fine for 1080p gaming, until the next cards come out.

going from 780Ti to 880 might not much of and improvement but going from 770 the performance gap might be more significant to warrant an upgrade.

I do hope that the 880 is 20nm, but I guess buying a 880 and then sli when the price drops should be pretty future proof, atleast for a gpu

from now on going to smaller node become much more difficult and more expensive. even for 28nm TSMC skip their 32nm plan altogether so they can pull 28nm on time. it has screwed up GPU maker in the past be it nvidia or AMD. for nvidia 40nm was quite a huge disaster and it costing them their market share. during 40nm generation AMD was able to even the gaming discrete market share slight edge to them (51% AMD, 49% Nvidia). AMD was hoping to keep gaining market share with their aggressive GPU road map by introducing 6k series with TSMC 32nm but TSMC killing 32nm and focusing on 28nm foil their original plan. then comes 6970 that is a bit slower than GTX580 but consume about the same as 580.
