Hi
I bought a new system and want to give my old system to my cousin. The specs are
Core 2 duo E7500@2.93ghz, 4GB DDR3 ram, 250 watt PSU, Radeon HD 6450 1GB DDR3, and a 1 TB WD HDD. He wants to play COD Black ops 2 and Ghosts(@1366*768 res, playable graphics). This processor won't support both those games. So is opting for Core 2 Quad Q8400 @2.66ghz better or Core 2 duo E8500@3ghz better? Both are refurbished and available cheap. Which should I go for(keeping in mind it can support most new games)? Note that my cousin is into casual gaming and just wants to play new games. Thanks in advance.

Correct, I second that. For recent games, though, you absolutely need Core 2 Quad, nothing else on this mobo will provide even halfway decent performance. But get something like Q9550 or similar if you can. Although, any quad is better than no quad :D

Recommendations:

1) Get another *quality* PSU first: XFX Core 550W or higher will be great, or any Seasonic of that power
2) Get Core 2 Quad
3) Get a decent VGA card, like R9 270x, or, at the very least, R7 260x.
4) If your motherboard supports it, install 8GB of RAM (not mandatory, but a good idea)

--> With that setup, you actually have a decent and capable machine for low-medium settings (even high in some games) with very good framerates.

Moreover, you have a nice PSU you can move over to the next computer if you upgrade entire build, and the VGA card to go with it, so its not a waste of money. Just make sure you get Core 2 Quad for cheap ;)

i spent a ton of money on my gamig rig and i dont want to spend so much on my old system( the one mentioned here).i wanted to go for the core 2 quad bt i read that a faster dual core is more powerful than a slower clocked quad core. So my question is will going for the core 2 quad q8400 decrease overall performance than my current core 2duo e7500? Is the higher clocked core 2 duo e8400 more powerful than quad q8400?(i cant get q9550. Q8400 is the only one available).

"Faster" dual core like e7500 won't be anywhere near e8400 in games. Besides, you can also overclock e8400, although not as much. Two additional cores make a whole world of difference - been there, done that. Try using e7500 on BF4, and it will fail miserably. Not so with quad.

Now, the latest pentium G based on haswell is another story... but when you compare it to quad like i5, it will be beaten considerably as well. Most games today make use of additional cores.

I know but doing all that is nothing short of a full upgrade. As I said earlier I put a lot of money on my new rig and don't want to spend much on this system. Also it has a slim case. If I do upgrade the PSU I have to change the case too because good quality tfx PSU is not available here in India. So one thing leads to another and I will be looking at a pretty big bill. The only reason I wanted to change the cpu is because it cannot support COD Black ops 2 and Ghosts(min cpu required is e8200). If you say there won't be much difference then i'd rather go with the e8400 as it consumes same power as my current e7500. If I go for the core 2 quad my current PSU can't support it right?. Or is it worth upgrading the CPU just for those two games? I'm in a dilemma. What do you guys think?

the system is prebuilt by dell( model is inspiron 560s). +12v has 17A,-12V has 0.3A
+5 v has 18A,+3.3 v has 11A. Also if i do go for the cpu upgrade would the core 2 quad be too much for the psu?

Guess the R7 240 is the best option considering power-performance ratio.
