i have a corsair 650 w psu, asrock 970 pro3 r2.0 mobo and a sapphire r9 280x, i put it together 1 day ago and just today my graphics card set on fire! my computer shut down and i tried turning it back on and i saw that the gpu was smoking. I took it out and tried turning on the pc and it seems to be working but its hard to tell because i cant connect a monitor. Also my cpu is a fx 8320 which the fan for has been running at around 4000 rpm which i thought was weird

i have a corsair spec 01 case with just the stock fan at the front mounted but the overall case doesnt feel hot, i installed speed fan yesterday and the cpu was running around 40c idle, i didnt overclock the cpu or gpu at all as i only had the pc working for a day

give us a list of parts in your system

is the system brand new from the store, or did you order something somewhere?
the fan is running so loud because its a stock fan, its terrible for 8320... so its normal, and it needs replacing..

by the way i7baby... isnt that 970 board a bad idea for 8320?

so the pc worked ok for a day? gpu fans were spinning too?

did you notice that gpu was smoking and you pulled it out (were the fans spinning) OR did the monitor go black and then you noticed the card? (in other words was the card alive when you noticed it?)

so you dont have any exhaust fan for the case ??? that's not good apply another fan on the back and top of the case ...you cannot monitor the case temp by any software i will say burning and smokes are reason of overheating and sometimes short circuit...

http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/g2h6qs list of parts, except psu is a corsair 650. yes my pc was working fine for a day but i did no gaming on it , i installed dayz today and after about 20 minutes of playing i quit the game and my pc crashed. i noticed a burning plastic kinda smell so i took off the front panel and tried turning the pc on to see what was going wrong and the gpu sparked and smoke started coming out so i unplugged it. i used one 6+2 pcie pin and a additional 6 pin.

If you have to rma the motherboard, see if you can get a 990fx chipset one instead. That's what the fx8 and 9 series are supposed to sit on. They give you headroom for overclocking too.

there is also an 8 pin motherboard power that looks similar to the pcie power and a mismatch will smoke parts

> i'm new to pc building

I think maybe so

> i think i did it properly

I think maybe not.

First of all, what kind of graphics card has a 6-pin AND an 8-pin connector?

Also, some of those connectors have all 12v on the front side and all GND on the back, but some are intended for a different socket and have the 12v on the left and GND on the right. God only knows why, but that will definitely short whatever you plug it into.

Bummer indeed.

If that's not what happened, then you plugged it in backwards, despite the keying (which IS possible). Then it's:

Ooo, snake eyes! I'm sorry sir. Next rollah...

One more thing. If a device melts and smokes, do NOT turn the machine back on until you pull it from the system! A short in the card can propagate through the bus pins and short the MB and (possibly maybe) the CPU. Then you're up sh its creek.

It could just be a bad GPU. You bought it secondhand from someone who said it "worked fine"... Maybe notsomuch. It would be nice to know what temps your GPU was running at, but I wouldn't plug it back in to find out.

My gtx 780, as did the 680ftw before that. It's a common setup for higher-end GPUs.
