I have a Acer Aspire M5201 64 bit desk top. Windows 8 Pro was put on to it in December and it behaved brilliantly. Since April I started to experience problems with the screen freezing and Ctrl Alt delete wouldn't work. I realised it was following Windows updates or major config that this started to happen. The message I received was no video input. If I changed the leads from my monitor to the machine from DVI to VGA and then switched the machine back on it worked again or if I completely shut down my desk top and disconnected the power and then reconnected it, it would start, however it would hang on start up and then I would have to reboot it again. Yesterday after a major config by windows, the machine, following me closing it down properly wouldn't start. I disconnected the machine from the mains plugged it all back in and it worked but again hangs on start up. It is driving me up the wall. The desk top has been upgraded as it was a 32 bit machine when it came out of the factory. My husband who was all things computers died in Feb but he made sure that the desk top was compatible with Window 8 Pro before he installed it. Can some one please help me because I am fed up of losing all my settings when I disconnect my machine and to be honest I have wasted so much time trying to resolve this problem? The machine in between times once I have got it to work, works fine for about two weeks and then problem persists again. It is really weird but it always seems to happen following a major update. Why?.

This has all the hallmarks of a motherboard failure, so if the unit is still under any kind of warranty, run, don't walk, to submit a claim.

But just to be sure, let's start with what you experience from the powered off state. You press the power button and do you see an Acer logo or anything of that sort and then after a short time the display shuts off or does the monitor immediately go into a power save mode and/or display a message about not getting a signal?

I have been told it could have something to do with my start up settings. It goes into sleep mode after five minutes and it is then that it sometimes just doesn't turn back on and says no video input. When I do manage to get it on it goes through the motions of aspire empowering etc and goes to the windows logo and the whirling circle and then it freezes and I have to reboot. It then starts no problem at all. I have done an Automatic repair and the response is, the problem couldn't be repaired. One guy said Windows 8 starts up very quickly to Windows 7 and if you have fast start up, it could have something to do with that. It has worked fine for the past three weeks but every time there is a update or config it really upsets it. If I leave my machine and it goes into sleep mode it won't wake back up. I ran a security sweep last night and it was on all night and was still on this morning because it hadn't gone into sleep mode.
