I have an aging Voodoo system that has failed. I've replaced all of the easily removable components and the system still fails so now I'm just going to gut it and replace the mobo and processor. It has been quite a while since I've built a system so I thought I'd poll the forum for some advice so I don't buy something that wont work with my other components.

Here is what I'm replacing:

  • Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo
    Intel Core 2 E6700 2.6 GHz processor

Here are some brand new components that I bought in an attempt to fix the box that I am going to use in the new system:

  • 2 sticks 2GB 240pin unbuffered DIMM DDR2 PC2-8500 ram
GeForce GT 610 2GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 video card

I have some other misc PCI components (sound card, etc.) and a 600W power supply.

I'm not looking to build anything ultra fast for gaming or anything and I'm not looking to spend a bundle. I just need to bring this thing back to life because it is a custom case that is really sharp looking in my entertainment center :D It can be AMD or Intel (though I'd prefer AMD for price considerations*). I'm just looking for something modern that is comparable (but a little zippier) to what I had.

I appreciate any suggestions and guidance in helping me choose a new mobo and processor. Anything to point me in the right direction so that I know it will work with the RAM and vid card I have.

Thank you!

*Are there any power supply connector considerations if I switch from Intel to AMD? I forget if this matters.

A GT 610 will not be usable for any games, even on low settings. It's only useful for basic web browsing or HTPC use.

You will not find a new motherboard that accepts ddr2 ram or anything above a core2duo, core2quad, or old black edition AMD quad core that will work with ddr2.

What is your budget and what do you plan to use the computer for?

I guess I'm just looking for something that will work with the memory & video card I just bought. The specs I had worked fine for my needs - basic office computing and watching TV shows on the Internet.
