I have an ASUS Rampage III Extreme board unused & boxed I would like to do something with. What CPU would you suggest I buy for the build? It will be for video/stills editing so it has to be Intel. Can I use 1155 on this board? (my choice of graphics card will take over from the CPU for processing video files). OR do I throw away this board and start from scratch.

Solution
That is an LGA1366 motherboard and it can ONLY and ONLY take CPUs that are LGA1366. Other will physically not fit. And even if they did fit, they have a different pin layout, which will most likely kill the components on first boot if you are unlucky.

That board only accepts 1366 I7s. That means I7 800 or 900 series. Since those are not produced for quite a while - you have to find one 2nd hand.

Also, even Sandy Bridge I7 are more productive than all 4 and some of the 6 cored 1366 socket CPUs.

It is best to start over. This board will only hold you down.

Shneiky, many thanks for the clarification, you can probably tell I have never build from scratch before. OK s/h, this could be a disaster if I don't get it right.
Any ideas of somewhere reliable that deals with s/h components. My budget is way way tight as I've just been made redundant (hence being at a loose end and deciding to undertake this project).
Your further help, as also from anyone else, greatly appreciated.

I think you misunderstood the first answer you got. That motherboard is a specific board that supports only the 4-generations old i7 Core and Core Extreme processors. They are not price-effective in today's world and even if you get them second-hand, they won't be very good and may well have reliability issues since they are all 4 to 6 years out of manufacturing. They're power-hungry and generally a bad idea IMHO.

Post your budget and maybe we can figure out a cost-effective build with newer components.

OK, I seem to be getting the picture (anyone want a boxed unused Rampage III Extreme board? Anyone...anyone).
My aim: shoot and edit high res video on a Nikon D800 as well as RAW stills. In video post I anticipated multiple video and audio tracks.
Would like to use Adobe Premier Pro (I have a legit copy of 5.5) (I'm not into Adobe Cloud software). I have After Effects to go with that.
I know it's 64Bit, have experience of Win7Pro
With a starting budget of £800 (possibly more later for an up-grade), Any ideas please.
Many thanks

Now few things you need to know: Video card does not matter as much as a lot of people make it to. Video editing, composting, VFX and 3D are still mainly CPU based. I am a 3D/Compositing generalist and I mainly work with Maya, Photoshop, Premier/AE and Nuke. All these softwares are heavily relying on CPU and not video card. The video card does accelerate some features, but it is far less important. There is no need for any video card that is more expensive the a GTX 660/760. I know its 50 bucks over your budget, but if you want, you can take the SSD out. Or swap the Blue-ray player for a simple DVD to drive costs down. The Cooler Master K280 is an adequate case with some good features, but if you don't like the design - change the case to something you like. Just make sure it fits ATX size motherboards and CPU coolers of at least 160mm. Cheers.

This should serve as a good starting point and it will run rings around anything you could build on the obsolete motherboard.

Fixed the video card (my bad) and added a legit copy of Win 8.1. Still scrapes in under your budget, but if you have some spare dosh lying around, get an SSD.
