i have an intel core i7, which comes with integrated graphics card and have a separate gpu. to use my gpu, would i have to plug the hdmi directly to the gpu or could i still use the gpu by plugging it directly to the motherboard. also are there any cons and pros about using either? and would i have to restart or shut down my computer before switching?

Yes you will plug your monitor into the ports on your GPU (not the mobo). Aftermarket GPU’s are more powerful than the integrated graphics. Integrated graphics are mostly meant for people who just use their computer for stuff like browsing, and everyday use type things. If you want to play games with decent settings you will need to use an aftermarket GPU.

Just use the HDMI connection from your graphics card (about half way up the case). The integrated motherboard graphics (at the top of your case) are far inferior to your dedicated graphics card. There is no reason to use integrated graphics if you have a discrete (sepearate/pci-E) graphics card.
