You'll need a videocapture card, so you can input the VCR into the PC through RCA or Coax.

Than you basically hit "play", record the screen and wait until the movie is done.

The comercial VHS is always mede with a distorted sync to make it impossible to make a copy by usin anothe VHS recorder or PC. Only a TV set will allow the distorted sync and the movie will look normal on the TV. But a VHS recorder is made so that it is impossible to copy. What you need is a signal converter or a very very old VHS recorder to make it work.
The reason why I want to copy is that I want to be able to play my movies in the future when there will be no VHS machines.
Better save them to DVD while the VHS still exists.

The VHS quality is so poor, it's probably not worth the effort TBH.

But you will need to find the proper hardware, and just feed it into a videocapture card. The PC can't read the VHS.

Grab an e-bay ATI x800 Pro or x850 Pro.

Cheap, can be PCIe or AGP, and has a ViVO connection (Video-In / Video-Out).

Perfect for capturing 480p from VHS or DvD to HDD via something like VirtualDub.

I actually have a ATI x800, but you still need a computer with an AGP slot.

Couldn't you transfer VHS-DVD without the card? I have heard it is possible as long as you have video editing software.

VHS is not a digital signal, you literally need to push play and record the movie while it plays through the video capture card. There's no way to just convert it, it's an analog tape.

If it's just an old movie, I would just search Google and see if you can find a digital copy, especially if it's incredibly old. Youtube has a ton of old, free movies now.
