Hi,

So, a co-worker gave me some DDR2 Kingston Hyper-X RAM (KHX8500D2K2/4G) and the problem is that on the sticker it says that the RAM is 2.3 Volts but my Motherboard states this on the Gigabyte Website under the Memory Section "4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory". The Motherboard I'm using is a Gigabyte M720-US3 (Rev 1.0) and I'm wanting to know if the RAM will just downclock itself so it will go into the 1.8 Volt Limit or if it will actually fry the Motherboard.

I've contacted Gigabyte Tech Support but they're taking an age to reply so I was wondering if any of you guys could point me in the right direction!

Thanks!

''Kingston’s KHX8500D2K2/4G is a kit of two 256M x 64-bit
2GB (2048MB) DDR2-1066 CL5 SDRAM (Synchronous
DRAM) memory modules, based on sixteen 128M x 8-bit
DDR2 FBGA components per module. Total kit capacity is
4GB (4096MB). Each module pair has been tested to run at
DDR2-1066MHz at a latency timing of 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V. The
SPD is programmed to JEDEC standard latency 800Mhz
timing of 5-5-5-18 at 1.8V
.''

it will operate at 800mhz cl5 as it is the spd speed and wont damage your mobo.

Thanks for getting back to me Chris, but is it possible if I could have a simplified version of what you meant as I'm not too knowledgeable on latency and stuff like that!

spd stands for serial present detect. so that means whereever you will install that memory modules they will ran at the spd speed as kingston pdf states! 1066mhz 2.2v is a tested optimal speed that has to be set (enabled) manually.

So this means that if I put it into my Motherboard, it will automatically adjust to run at 1.8 Volts?

yes [800mhz 5-5-5-5-18 timings 1.8v ] spd speed
