Hey guys, recently got the i7-4790k....L3 batch. Im using a phanteks PH-TC14PE cooler in a corsair 540 air case.

CPU runs 4.4ghz turbo with 1.374V, but the temps are so sporatic using Realtemp + HW Monitor im getting spikes of up to 70C just browsing webpages. (Not using the IGPU).

Anyone know whats a good program to test temps on higher loads?

I noticed the forum is full of threads relating to 4790k temps, maybe a trend there (I posted one as well, mine is fine normally but unusally hot on stress tests)
For 'higher loads' HW monitor and encode a video, if that is not too hot intel extreme utility has a stress test.

1.374v seems very high for 4.4.
At 4.4, my 4790K run at 1.20
I think there is something wrong with your bios settings.
I really doubt that you got a lemon in the bin lottery.

I just use optimized defaults not bothering to oc. Higher OC really is not needed.
Temperatures are determined by the voltage you need.
Once you get past 1.25, heat rises rapidly.

I use OCCT for stress testing.

Could you give a hint about what to do about the bios settings, like a tutorial link? I have the same problem, high temp and 1.37 on load.

Im using the Z97X-SOC Force.....bio settings were untouched on default/auto or anything of that jazz. No idea why its defaulted 1.374V for 4.4GHZ turbo. Thinking I got screwed in the silicon lottery? Doubt Tigerdirect will replace me.

You may want to check your max temp under load before doing anything, I mean don't push it over 80C to be safe, just get a ballpark of is it good or bad. As for the bios, it may need adjustment, I may have the same problem, I'm still trying to find out.

No idea if its good or bad....didn't even run the test for a whole pass. Used prime95 blend.

Temps hit 82C and kept climbing slowly, didn't really want to go past that haha.
Should I be getting that hot with a Phanteks PH-TC14PE? Not to mention the high voltage, may have to manually set that.

That is way too high voltage for stock 4.4Ghz turbo. Some are running 4.8Ghz at that voltage. Reset bios to default or clear cmos. You shouldn't need that high voltage to run at stock 4.4Ghz. Mine ran at 1.18v at 4.4Ghz on all cores at stock.

Yeah, im having problems with that actually. My CPU vcore defaulted to that. New bios, same thing. Not even sure why. Im trying to set the voltages manually now, but no dice. It still says 1.374 in CPU-Z

Alright, changed some settings here and there. Now at 4.0GHZ, w/ turbo boost enabled + power saving enabled. Getting 60C to start, with a stead climb to 85C over 20 minutes of Prime95...seems pretty broken to me. Forgot to add 1.15 for Vcore.

For your comparisons, I have OC:ed my 4790K to 4,6Ghz. My voltage is stable at 1.285v.

Idle temps are around 35 degrees. Load temps when gaming between 50-60 degrees, and stresstesting (Prime95 and Aida64) takes me to 68 degrees.
All with an h80i from Corsair.

I have an L4-batch

Thanks for the comparison! Are you using Small FFTs on Prime95? I seem to hit 82C on Small FFTs on stock! x.x Voltage is 1.13 currently.

I posted in this thread earlier that I might have the same problem, I had similar voltages, temps, and a similar cooler, and should have been getting ok performance and temp but wasn't.

I considered many possibilities including just faulty temp readings, nothing in the case seemed hot. Wheels started turning in my mind though, and long story short, I updated to the latest motherboard bios and voltage and temp seem very good now. 1.17 volts and 72C stable on the intel stress test. Prime95 is a torture test, you don't have to judge everything by that though the intel and others aren't much weaker I suspect. I'm still testing and tweaking though.

So take your time and try to figure it out, it might need the bios or something else.

Thanks for the info! Been reading around. OCN owners club has actually said Prime95 is not too good for stress testing Haswell and overvolts it at times. I didn't see it, but I did see the temps jump to the same temps at lower volts (Think 1.374V -> 1.13V with the same load temps?) So instead I just started using Intel XTU, hoping for some luck. Running it right now, temps look amazing (at stock haha). 63C forever please. Actually looks like i'd be able to OC.
