I have a 2TB Western Digital portable HDD and the other night whilst trying to transfer a lot of very large files, the drive froze and the only way I could unfreeze it was to unplug it. When I plugged it back in again, I realised that I was getting very low on space so tried to delete a few large files to free up some space. Unfortunately the drive crashed and froze again and had to unplug again. I am well aware that this has most likely corrupted the disk beyond repair but I am just wondering if anyone can help.

The current situation is as follows:
- The disk does NOT appear in My Computer or in DOS using command prompt.
- The disk does appear in device manager and claims to be working properly
- The light does flash and the disk can be heard spinning
- The disk is recognized by various WD softwares but none can access it to run any form of repair.
- The disk is recognized in computer management / disk management but states that it needs initialized, however when I try to initialize it, it states that "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
- I have tried running DISKPART from command prompt (as administrator) in order to reformat the drive but get the same error message.
- I have also tried different cables and USB ports.

I am not overly concerned about the data on the drive as fortunately I had backups of everything elsewhere and I have since purchased a new drive, however as they are not cheap, I would like to see if there is any way to repair this one and use it for non-essential backups.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Unfortunately that link only comes up with a 404 page error. Could you please recheck your link.

Thanks.

My advice? Play it safe and get a Seagate next time. I have had the same problem as you. My drive was about a month old.
