Volume won't go above 50% when slider is set to 100%. Headphones are recognized as speakers.

When I go into my Playback Devices, it clearly shows as "Speakers" when I have headphones plugged in. Because of this, my computer refuses to play at max volume. When I raise the slider to 100%, the green indicator bar never goes above 50% no matter what's playing (Likewise if I slide it to 50%, the green indicator always remains at 25% peak).

I know the problem has to do with my computer recognizing my headphones as speakers, as I've read so many places. So here's the problem:

I've turned off loudness equalizer, I've tried plugging my headphones into every applicable slot on my computer and I've gone into the registry to try editing the pin## registry to 02 00 00 00 to make it a headphone slot. Even so when I plug my headphones in, Playback shows speakers.

I need to know how to force my computer to treat my device as headphones, so that the 'actual' volume will be the same as the 'slider' volume.

I thank you kindly for any assistance you can provide in this matter.

When you say green indicator are you talking about this

Green.jpg

If so this green indicator is is based on what is being played and will not necessarily go to 100% just because you set the limit at 100%
Make sure whatever is playing your audio youtube, iTunes, VLC, pandora etc that the program's Volume is also at 100% many programs use there own volume control that will make the audio quieter and not reach 100%

For example on youtube videos it defaults to about 65% volume and you need to change it.
Try this youtube video make sure the "youtube volume" is turned all of the way up. (the volume is the speaker icon next to the play button at the bottom of the youtube video. My green bar spikes to 100% when they start a deep base at about 33 seconds in the video and stays at over 50% through out the rest of the video. Sorry if you don't like the song, but I guess you can take off your head phones :).

Speaking of headphone, what plug are you plugging you head phones in to? Is it on the back of your computer? It is a plug on your speakers Does it say it is a headphone jack?

First off, a fine cover of a fine song. Thanks for showing me something new. That being said, you're right; I should've further elaborated.

The green indicator (And yes, I did that mean that one) stays at 50% max on things that should go as high as 100% (I.E. that video). Also, it's plugged directly into the back of my computer (pin02 in my registry). I do appreciate your help, but alas I already know the problem, merely not how to fix it. I recognize the problem as it's one I've seen many people having. All have fixed it, but none have said how.

My computer simply treats my headphones as if they 'were' speakers, which limits the volume compared to what it's actually supposed to be. Headphones are allowed a louder volume level. Thank you, though; for your various attempted solutions. Any help is always appreciated :3

Ahh, interesting, I did not know this about the head phone vs speakers. That does suck.

I am sure you have already done this but I would look at drivers for your audio card. Don't use some crappy Microsoft driver, use the real driver from the manufacture's web sight. Most manufactures also have a 3rd party program that will give you more control, that would probably be your best bet. I used some Realtek one to setup my speaker system and it had a lot more options then the plain old windows one did. Even If your computer is from an OEM like dell they might have some dell program for audio.

If your motherboard has a AC97 or HDAUDIO pin out on it you might try looking for a front head phone jack solution.

I will keep my ears open for a solution.

What is the model of the sound card?

Apologies for the extended delay, but I did figure out the problem. And by figuring out the problem, have not had a computer for a while until now:

My RAM had just begun failing. Somehow this was affecting it's ability to detect my headphones properly, so I couldn't change it as it couldn't remember half of anything I was doing.

Replaced RAM, problem fixed itself. Thanks everyone for your time~
