Installing a PSU

So the other day I was on my pc and it shut off, followed with some sparking sound and a burnt electrical smell. I assume it was the psu. So I took it out the next day and still has the electrical smell to it. Is that what the problem is? I hope nothing else went with it. Although I don't see why it would take anything else with it. Doesn't power on at all so I ordered another one. Less power so hopefully it will work. To put it back in where do the power cables go? I have no idea where any of them plug in except for like one. Plus pulling off the side panel closest to the mb something fell out of the side of it. It looks like a plate of some sort. Has 4 holes in the middle and 4 lines going out. Also has these standoff type things on it. What is that?

Who assembled this PC? IS it under warranty?

Not good

Might not be good...no way to tell

More not good.

Do you have a full list of the components of this thing? What PSU (old and new), CPU, GPU, RAM, etc...

I don't have all the specs nor the time to look but some guy custom built it I guess. Got it from a trade. Had to basically rebuild it. Had a bad mobo and gpu. The thing has been a hassle ever since I got it. The old psu was a powork pw 650. And the new one is a thermaltake smart series sp-550. Gpu is gtx 750 ti. 8 gb ram. Mobo is a 970 pro3 and CPU is an and fx something. I don't know the specific one. And what do you mean is it under warranty the psu? No. Considering I've no way to even get ahold of the person nor will he reply I doubt I could get a warranty off if it. But the other stuff I could because it was ALL replaced and bought new. I already acknowledge I got screwed by the way, before I start to hear that.

Warranty = I didn't know if this was a prebuilt or not. From a trade show, you're on your own.

The PSU dying may or may not have killed something else.
The new PSU, Thermaltake, may either be mostly OK, or utter crap.
The part that 'fell out the side'....can you provide a pic?

If someone came to me with this PC, I would take everything apart and rebuild it.

I can provide a pic when I get home. Have an email I can send them to? I'm on mobile and have no idea how to post pictures. And basically is rebuilt..except for the ram, case, and psu..

Also by further inspection I see yellow plastic. And from what I can see through the case, there seems to be a dark spot on it. Like a burn mark maybe..would it be safe to take the case apart of the psu to check further?

Don't do that. Just try a replacement.

I will but I have to wait for it to come in. In the mean time do you have an email I can send these pictures to? It'll only take a second. Just need an answer and opinion

Fixed the problem. Forget to plug in the sata cable to the drive. Everything seems to be working fine. How can I monitor the supply and make sure it's enough power for my system? it's a 550w as stated before.
