So, I've got a Lenovo Z585 right now. Yes, I use a laptop, primarily because I'm a writer, first and foremost. Gaming is something I do when I've met my word count for the day. My Laptop crapped out on me and Lenovo, after much complaining, has agreed to send me a new one. They claim it's an upgrade. By all accounts, it seems to be. But, I'm not sure, graphically, how much of an upgrade it is. Just looking for some reassurance, I suppose. I'm stuck with the new one either way. My Z585 runs Skyrim (with mods) and Bioshock Infinite on High, just for some comparison. One of my buddies seems to think that the graphics card on the new one is a downgrade in some way...I don't know, this isn't my field. Thanks in advance for the insight.

Current specs on my broken Z585 are
AMD A10-4600M APU with Radeon HD Graphics
2.30 GHZ
6gb RAM
Win 8.1 64 bit operating system

The Lenovo Z510 that I'm receiving has (I'm also receiving an addition 4GB of ram from them, so it'll have 8GB total)

Lenovo Z510 Laptop - 59421675 - Dark Chocolate:

Processor
4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)

What kind of games are you playing? You will definitely be able to play some games on the lowest setting, but you won't be able to play the most demanding games. I know that because the specifications on my laptop are about the same as yours.

And I play Skyrim and the new Bioshock on high settings

So are you saying the new laptop with the i7 is actually a step down and won't be able to play those games?

That's a very significant CPU upgrade, and since you were already using onboard graphics, you'll likely see a slight performance increase.

However, that laptop is by no means a gaming machine, as it lacks a separate graphics processor.

Like Tobias said, you'll be able to play some games, not new high graphics games like CoD/BF, but SOME games yes, on low settings.

James - I get high graphics out of Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite, Infinite is probably the newest game I own. So, essentially, whatever I'm getting now will most likely go up slightly. I shouldn't worry about a downgrade in performance? If so, that sets my mind at ease.

Can you specify what Radeon HD Graphics model you're talking about? It makes a big difference. But no, I'm not saying that you won't be able to game, or that it will be a step down. I'm just saying that you won't be able to run every game on highest settings, but you will be able to enjoy a lot of games if you're willing to play on medium to low graphics.

It will definitely not be a downgrade.

This links proves that you'll get a much better processor with your new laptop.

That's definitely encouraging. I definitely have a bit more anticipation now waiting for my new machine to arrive. It didn't cost me anything except for some complaints and a strongly worded letter to the upper management of Lenovo, so it's a good deal.

That's great. I hope you'll be satisfied. Have fun with your new machine. But remember: Lenovo is not a gaming company, so if you want to upgrade in the future, consider finding a computer dedicated to gaming.

Preferably not a laptop, because you'll waste $500-1000 on a gaming laptop "premium"
