Newly built Computer being horribly slow?

So today I build a new computer for playing games ad high fps with good settings. However, I did not have a windows cd so I installed Linux ubuntu instead. I downloaded the Linux version of steam and tried to run Team Fortress 2 (Liunx supported by steam) and it was horribly laggy and the resolution was quite bad. anybody have any idea as to why?

Computer specs:

~MSI 970A-G43 mobo

~AMD fx 6300 black edition cpu

~Corsair Vengeance 8GB ram

~EVGA Geforce GTX 750ti gfx card

~EVGA 500W PSU

Side note: When I launch a game according to ubuntu's system monitor probram the cpu goes up 100%

This Computer was $600 so I would really like to use it without dealing with lag or any other problems.

You installed the NVIDIA CUDA numerical computing drivers, not the NVIDIA proprietary graphics drivers. You are running the open-source Nouveau driver for your card because that's the default driver (and Ubuntu can't ship with the copyrighted NVIDIA driver pre-installed.) Graphics-heavy games will not run that great on the Nouveau driver. Games that are older and not very difficult to run will run fine which is why TF2 ran poorly but Super Meat Boy ran fine...

Ok I installed libcuda1-331-updates_331.38-0ubuntu7_amd64.deb (built version) and still have no luck. Some games run fast (like Super Meat Boy) but TF2 and Minecraft still are quite choppy. Do you think its a problem with the graphics card?

Skittles posted the correct link to properly install the proprietary NVIDIA driver on your machine in the second post. You will want to follow the instructions in that link and you should be good. Just click on the icon up hear the clock and follow the instructions and it will work.
