Hey,

I know there are a few threads with this question but I'm debating still.

I'm coming from a oc'd Q6600,
4670k-$252
4690k-$282

I'm getting a samsung ssd Evo
And Kingston fury 8gb (2x4) 1866
And own a gtx660ti, I'm bottle necked right now with the Q6600 at 3.0ghz.

I just want to know if the extra $30 is worth it in the long run? My Q6600 rig lasted 7 years (2009 :) lol I just don't wanna buy a new rig for a while.

I watch/stream movies and I play games like wildstar and diablo 3.

I also wanna know should I dabble with oc'ing with a new CPU? With my Q6600 I only oc'd it recently just to get some more kick out of it because it's been struggling.

All advice is greatly appreciated, I know there's not a huge difference in the cpu's but I'd like to make the right choice...and Devils canyons just sounds cool too ;p

since I have bought the z97x sli already everyone's telling me the 4690k is a no brainer but for $30 I can get the same thing out of the 4670k I'm told? The CPU architecture is the huge improvement from the older CPU I have so that's what's gonna make a difference anyhow.

Sorry for the repeated question,
Thanks guys.

There's always waiting for 5th gen but I'd only wait till then for the decrease in price of the old CPUs.

Solution
I'm saying I've seen only $5 price spreads between the 4670K and 4690K chips on several e-tailer sites. Maybe local stores have a larger price spread.
Yes, the 4690k is WELL worth it. Most consumer 4690k chips will hit 4.6ghz-4.7ghz with barely a voltage increase. The lack of hyperthreading and the increased thermal transfer efficiency really benefit the 4690k vs the 4790k which most reviews can't get over the 4.6-4.7ghz mark. The % gain with the OC is so much better on the 4690k.

With the 4690k you're going to be getting lower temps, better voltages at the same clocks, and higher possible clocks. I'm assuming you wouldn't want to push your card to the limit, but if you ever think there's going to be a chance you'll want to later down the road it will be worth it.

If you have no intentions of overclocking, you don't need it performance wise, but it's would still run at cooler temperatures if that makes any difference in your purchase. If you're overclocking, it's definitely worth it, and the better temps is doubly useful to you.

It also depends on your GPU, if you have an entry level card, you aren't going to be able to take advantage of an overclock. If you have intentions of upgrading other components in the future, it will more than likely be worth it.

I definitely wanna upgrade my gpu in maybe a year or two. But I'm not a huge oc guy, it's fun but it's not necessary for me. I just want decent fps when I play games.

How long would the 4670k vs the 4690k last in regards to ocing. Years wise?

Like my q6600 had done me well until now and that's 7 years with no oc till now.

Is it smart to oc right off the bat or will the CPU upgrade in general and the 3.5ghz make a difference in itself? Also I believe that a ssd is gonna help as well if I'm not wrong.

Thanks for your help guys. I really wanna get the 4690k but still the 4670k is just as good. Anyways let me know, thanks

Ohh ya I realize that but I'm herringbone a supplier discount it's 239.89 plus only 5% tax for the 4670k.

The 4690k is 251x13% tax so that's the difference. I don't wanna just get the 4670k just because it's cheaper but it is a good deal.
