Hello all,

I have been using my self built desktop for the last 6 years without any trouble however it has been giving me issues for the last few weeks.

The first problem was it would power on but not post, the fans would remain spinning at 100% for some reason. Some times it would power up for a few seconds and then power itself off before powering back on again. Finally after maybe a few rounds of this it would decide to turn on.

I eventually took everything apart and gave it a clean, replaced the thermal paste and reassembled the whole machine, still had the same problem. When I was able to log in, I updated all the drivers and ran memtest, memtest ran for 18hours on both ram sticks with no errors.

I finally installed Windows 7 quietly hoping there may be a fix, no dice. However, did notice something. I booted up using only one of the ram sticks, the machine would boot (more successfully) if used in certain slots, other slots wouldn't even post; this was tried with both sticks one at a time with similar results. However, when I use both ram sticks together (placed in slots they previously worked individually) then there is a 90% chance the computer will post but Windows will still not load for some reason.

I would appreciate any help from knowledgeable members asap as my work is starting to build up.

System specs fyi (all stock setting):

GPU - XFX Radeon HD 4870

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply man.

I would've never thought it to be the psu. I do have another psu which is being used in an older build, but it is weaker, hasn't been powered on for a while and would be a little difficult to reach.

What would you advise?

Ok, I did the bench test as instructed. Everything functioned like clockwork, the computer did a successful post each time, surprisingly.

What would you advise next?
