do I really need to use an external HD to ghost my old hard drive?

I am about to buy another SATA HD but want to keep all data. Can I just attach the new drive onto a SATA power and connector and run Clonezilla with the old drive attached as well?

That's the best and fastest way to clone. Install a HDD into a sata port and clone the system drive or any other drive you have on your comp. Then to be on the safe side, install the new cloned HDD into the sata port of the old HDD that was just used to clone the new drive.
