How does internet work

sorry this may be dumb. But i have 3mbps internet and its alright but its the fastest in my area without spending 100 dollars on it. When im on youtube and someone on my xbox gaming/watching youtube why does it slow down. Also how does internet work in general. A layman term explanion is good a super detailed one with fancy words i'll still understand so any answer is appreciated

You have 3Mbps coming into the house. When you're the only one using it, it's OK, but when someone else uses it, you have to share that 3Mbps.

It's just like the water coming in the house. If you're taking a shower, the water pressure is fine, but with 2 peoplk taking a shower(2 different showers) plus the washing machine and the dishwasher all going at the same time, the water pressure will be less.

The water one is a good analogy. Think of the Internet connection coming into your house as a water pipe. As more people use water from different faucets, everyone's water pressure drops. I remember many years ago, back in the late '60s, protesters (not sure what they were protesting, possibly the Vietnam war) would get hundreds and hundreds of them to coordinate, and they would all flush toilets in a city at the same time. The city's water pressure would drop to nothing, and for ten minutes or so no one in the city had any water coming out of their pipes.
