So I want to set up wireless streaming for my parents, and It needs to be wireless and easy-to-use..

Their TV is not a smart tv. I initially thought of the Chromecast, but that seems more of a second screen approach.

Would a wireless usb receiver work in the tv? Are there USB receivers that have an interface? Also would need something with decent storage (2tb+). Would something like the wdtv live be a good option?

The best solution I can think of is having a NAS or HDD bay, connected to a Raspberry Pi, which would be connected to the TV and the network through a Wireless receiver. Only problem being there is no simple way to download torrents through the Pi that I am aware of.

Any ideas?

1) You said torrent's. Torrent's are considered piracy here even if the torrent's are legit freeware/shareware. its frowned upon and no one helps it. I won't give any advice on that but I will help with the other.

2) The easiest thing in my opion is go get a roku or some kind of stand along streaming device and plug it in to the TV. Then have a NAS or Server with the files.

Does the roku have known issues with non-smart tvs? Is the file structure/interface Windows-like, or just a list of everything?

The Roku only need an HDMI cable to the TV nothing more. If its a smart tv or not has nothing to do with it.

And I'm not 100% sure. I've never used one but i know people who have. Me i use either use my Media Server which is connect to HDMI to my TV and VGA to my 24 inch so i can use either or or i stream though my 360 though media center but you need a Windows XP, Vista, 7 machine with Media Center to do that. Windows 8+ won't work.
